Online Workshop - Network of Young Scientists

Virtual Conference on Sept. 10th, 2020

The HVI GasTech Network of Young Scientists hosted an online workshop with scientific presentations from the 4 partner institutions LTU, TUW, KIT and TUC.

9 PhD-students and Post-Docs presented their work on different fields of thermochemical conversion of biomass and waste. A broad range from experimental to numerical topics was covered in the workshop, enabling scientific exchange and a strong cooperation between the partners.

The objective of the PHOENIX project is the training of Early Stage Researchers (ESR) in gasification technology for anthropogenic waste and low grade biomass. With its research and education focus PHOENIX strongly contributes to the current ambition of the international community to establish a carbon-neutral society based on the use of renewable energy sources, a gradual phasing out of fossil energy and establishment of a circular economy as described e.g. in the EU SET plan and in the EU action plan for a circular economy. The overall research objective of the project is the implementation of gasification technology as a key carbon recycle technology for the production of renewable chemical energy carriers to be used for long-term energy storage, as base chemicals and as transportation fuels. The ESRs will work within a unique multidisciplinary team of world leading scientists and industrial partners which share their expertise in gasification as well as in the pre- and postprocessing technologies. The partners provide access to their unique research infrastructures on gasification technologies from lab- to pilot-scale and industrial gasification facilities where the ESRs can conduct their scientific studies but are also introduced to operation of technical gasifier systems in hands-on training modules and secondments. The training programme has four strongly interlinked research topics, i.e. fuel characterisation, entrained flow and fluidized bed gasification and numerical simulation as well as training elements on presentation and communication skills, project management and energy system design. The ESRs will develop a deep knowledge in technological, ecological and economic aspects of the waste gasification processes integrated in an industrial environment aiming for a carbon-neutral society. With the experience gained during their training in PHOENIX the Early Stage Researchers will be prepared to contribute to the shaping of a new sustainable economy.
